Repost: SKorea Pinoys, take note of changes in law—DFA (GMA News)

Let me start this month with a "good news" for our kababayans here in Korea.

Naturalized...  Alex wants me to apply for a South Korean citizenship as much as possible.  I'm actually just planning to get a permanent residency but one of the Korean English Teachers (KETS) at the academy who just recently returned from her 2 years stay in the States told me about how I could actually get dual citizenship as a Korean's spouse.   It didn't interest me much though since my mind was full with more pressing "issues" at that time.  This is one of the issues (again?) I would love to verify with Ate Betchay today but for some reasons, I couldn't meet up with them again (again?).

I'm actually in the middle of editing my notes for my online course when our connection suddenly slowed down.  I restarted the pc and automatically logged on to my ....com.ph account and one of the featured articles caught my attention:

SKorea Pinoys, take note of changes in law—DFA

Filipinos in South Korea were advised Friday of revisions to the immigration laws of South Korea allowing for dual citizenship to people meeting certain conditions.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Seoul, said this is aimed at preventing brain drain and bringing in talented foreigners.

In an article on its website, the DFA said the revisions in the nationality act allowing dual citizenship applies to:

* Foreigners with "exceptional talent" * Foreigners married to South Koreans * Koreans adopted overseas as minors * Koreans who gained foreign nationality through marriage * Overseas Koreans who are over 65 years old, and * Koreans who gained dual citizenship at birth, if they apply for dual citizenship and take the oath of allegiance before turning 22 years old.

Previously, South Korea allowed naturalization only for foreigners who lived there for five years or longer and those who married Korean nationals and have stayed in the country for over two years.

On the other hand, the new immigration law also allowed the collection of fingerprints and photos of foreigners arriving in the country to bolster security against terrorism.
"This law would apply to foreigners 17 years old or older, except for officials of foreign governments and international organizations, as well as others exempted under a presidential decree," the DFA said.—JV, GMANews.TV
Now, I can go back and concentrate "studying" while waiting for our visitors to arrive... It would have been better if they arrived earlier.  God knows how I want to be somewhere else right now: finally meeting BD and family, and the CONQUISTADOR, indulging on the food brought by other friends, drinking soda or coffee and chatting...  And then maybe later on T, A and I could go eye-shopping again, kkk...

Ate, for a second I was trying to decode what were you trying to say on the last part of your post. Hahahahaha Lots of short cuts and single letters. Hehehehehe ;) Me too, still can't decide. I have some European co-workers, they have been here for 10-12 yrs now and they still can't decide if they want to be naturalized. Everybody here wants to be naturalized. Renewable naman permanent residency pero somehow it feels safer when you're a citizen.

jehan, missed you yesterdayㅜ_ㅜ
anyways, jaz was just talking about it. although approved na sya, it seems na yung mga mg-papa-naturalize pa lang NEXt year ang eligible for that dual citizenship.

@ kassidy's notes

thanks for the visit. yun din iniisip ko, kung anong mga hassles ng dual citizenship. it's beneficial din talaga if i go for it but i'm really still undecided yet...

i opted for permanent residency rather than korean citizenship because dual citizenship was not yet available at that time(and despite constant prodding from my hubby's family to be a korean citizen)....i don't know if i will apply for the korean citizenship even if the dual citizenship law really pushes thru.......i have to weigh my options first....kkk

hi Eden! for the "letters" part, ginaya ko si Emm, hehe...

yung mga co-workers mo ba jan na rin nakapag-asawa or americans na rin ba napangasawa nila or do they have families back home?

sa akin lang ah, siguro if my whole family is here, di ako magse-second thoughts about the citizenship. kaya lang nagkalat kami kase. haha.. di bale, i still have like until october to give my answer to alex or siguro until next year...

hi Jempres!

oo nga, sayang, pero kase alam mo na, they don't tell me their plans ahead here. like hah! na lang lagi nasasabi ko. imagine asking me at 2a.m. last saturday to go at 9a.m. sa school activity ng niece ni alex. i really felt so bad. i didn't go anyway. but had to stay home for the arrival of my first sis in law and preparation for the picnic the following day at Gimpo...

hi Cher!

yun din iniisip ko. if di pushed thru eto or may pre-conditions pa, i might just go for the permanent residency. but if i would be eligible by next year, and wala naman hassles if i choose dual citizenship, then good talaga sya.. nagkalat kase kami magkakapatid although andito nga naman ako because i followed my husband and to start a family. kaso as an individual.. alam mo na yon, kkkk...

Hi, I am also married to korean but my husband didn't want me to change my citizenship..He and my mother in law suggested permanent residency only.

I dont know yet what will be the advantage to be korean citizen..Since in the future we are planning to go and live in Philippines

I also hope that there won't be any hassles for those with dual citizenship. i also don't see myself growing old here so i'm undecided yet...

i'm just not sure kung anong fields of work yung covered ng "exceptional talent" na tinukoy. should i get updated on it, i'll post it again. kaso by next year pa nga ang effectivity nito so in a few months pa bago ma-plantsa siguro yung bill... better yet, you can email ate Jaz by getting to her site. just check my bloglist "Ate Jazz of Love in Asia"
