Most friends or relatives would ask me why Koreans look really good (because of the dramas and movies they see) and I try to answer them to the best of my ability and knowledge but Arirang has at least answered this hard to answer question for me and for those who are still curious as to why Koreans are so into their looks...
Here's the clip from Arirang Today...
Aren't we all into our looks? As always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Is being thin or fat beautiful or ugly? In the Philippines, with this kind of body, I would be definitely called "healthy" or told that "marriage suits me" or complimented as "voluptous." wahahaha... I can confindently wear shorts or skirts. But in Korea, time and time again, I'm being told that I'm fat. The one I hate the most was a guest who told Alex I was really fat while she pigged out (I'm a bitch too) on the dish I cooked especially for him. Okay, my friend told me to just think that maybe the guest actually wanted to say that "my heart is fat" for the sumptous meal... hehe.. Thank you ate Arcy. You always have the words to make people feel better...
But I'm just so comfortable with myself or, let's just say, with my body. Sometimes I feel like my ears would bleed from Alex' prodding for me to lose weight, like I hear it at least 5 times a day, 365 days a year...
Last September 2009, with a staggering 55kg weight, my aunts would always talk about how I woke up at 5:00a.m. way back in college just to do taebo in front of our house after jogging around the capitol grounds. But now, I don't seem to find the "motivation" (even to just be fashionable) to really get "thin" or be "in"...
Like other women out there, I think I haven't been paying attention to my weight or looks after getting married. For the past months, I tried to lose weight but Alex doesn't seem to see any difference. Yeah, the scales won't also hit that target number yet.. Ah, not just working hard enough, just trying to, hahaha...

gosh you're way too thin for me....that reminds me that after my medical check up, the nutritionist reminded me that i should be at 50 kilos only so she was encouraging me to lose 20 plus kilos more even after i already lost 20 kilos after giving birth.....i told her my family was born with a naturally big structure of bones and the 50 kilos weight on that structure would make me look like a super model....hahahahahaha....so she said maybe i could lose around 15 kilos...is that nutritionist joking?i wanted to hit her hard....bwahahaha
hi Cher!
oo nga, people here don't seem to understand different body/bone structures. yung iba sticking out na yung bones akala sexy pa rin tingnan kase payat.. haay.. hehe... ako din, highschool pa lang malaki na behind and balakang ko. but husband's relatives look at them and tell him i'm fat or big. i always say no, this is sexy in the philippines, haha! tapos sasabihin nya andito na daw ako sa korea, haha... i hope on my turn, i won't be told to lose like 10 kilos for my height, haha... lalabas pagka-igorot ko. kase si alex pag sinabi ng "expert" pinipilit nya kong sundin..grrr...
have a nice week ahead..
i can understand why koreans are into their looks. well, this is just my opinion. koreans aren't really gorgeous-looking people. they are aware of it, i'm sure. this awareness gives them insecurities. had not for their white skin i don't think they'd look good. imagine a filipino wearing too many layers of clothes and sporting korean hairstyle. what's the usual reaction? "naku, hindi bagay sa'yo kasi maitim ka. maduming tignan sa'yo ang patong-patong na damit lalo na 'yang ganyang magulong hairstyle." but when we see koreans wearing them they just simply look fashionable. fair complexion makes a difference. anyway, because they only see average/typical look everyday, seeing someone who look differently from the others (small eyes, flat nose, moon face, and big head)make them drool. whereas, in the Philippines, seeing beautiful face is an ordinary thing. in my observation, filipinos are only vague/conscious when it comes to their pimples and skin color. but with the face, i don't think we're that too detailed. although we also show big admiration for a "face-to-die-for" but it's not like the way koreans admire every facial details. i've watched several korean shows and they never fail to mention the word "cute smile, beautiful, good skin, glowing eyes, etc." this is something we seldom hear in Pinas. like what i've said, we're used to seeing perfect facial features, not only on TV but even on the street.
that's what you called culture.
we should respect it.

"(small eyes, flat nose, moon face, and big head)"
This kind of facial structure exist in any culture, you make it sound like this is "typical" Korean face xD The reason why Koreans are so conscious about their looks so much compared to other countries is because of it's society. Korea is probably the only country that asks for 2x2 picture on your job resume(companies go far as considering employees' looks because they think it determines the image of their company especially true if the person applying is a female) I can rant on and on about this but I'm probably boring people. Just know that Koreans love being Koreans and if some Westerner tells you Koreans get plastic surgery to look like them or envy them, they don't know wth they're talking about because there's difference between WANTING bigger eyes as to WANTING to look like Westerners.
Anyways sorry about long comment, have a nice day jehan! and don't worry about people telling you you're fat I don't know what that's about but I'm pretty sure you're probably aware that Korean weight standard is ridiculous.
Thanks for sharing the vid, sis. It's very informative.
Btw, I can imagine all the pressure you go through. But at 55 kg, you're not even fat.
Enjoyed reading y9our blog. :-)
